It's been a good few years since I travelled here, so I'm trying to remember as I go haha, bare with me! This could be interesting for sure.
I spent nearly 3 weeks out in Salou, and it wasn't one to forget - so much happened it was unreal, from the Catalan people going on strike for independence from Spain to someone setting off a car bomb, and medical issues.
I booked to go here via Hays, another travel agent I highly recommend, they do some out of this world deals - which just cannot be missed, yet alone the fact they saved all those Thomas cook staff from being made redundant. Company I hold high in my mind personally.
If your wanting a hub to stay In then travel to different areas of Cataluyna this is the idea place, its surrounded by beautiful beaches, cliff tops you can climb up and see the view from its a short walk to the local town centre which is a major tourist hotspot, personally I prefer the less typical touristic area than Salou, but I met some incredible people whilst I was out there - including an amazing dutch couple who I cant wait to travel over to visit.
Whilst I was here I took day trips over to BCN (Barcelona) which took approx 2 hours via coach to travel too which they did on a regular basis, highly recommend this just to get out of the area for a little while. There is other excursions you can book whether thats day trips to little one to one trips, to going to Portaventura to Ferrai World, you name it there is a trip you could take for you and the whole family.
The walk from where I stayed, to the Main area of the town was beautiful if you took the coastal route, which took approx an hour, If you went the other way which is more direct it took approx 10/15 minutes which is always ideal, there was no need to wait for taxis etc.
I went during September/October time and the weather was incredible still, couldn't knock it at all. I managed to sunbathe, explore and chill in the sun enjoying my favourite drinks and areas for the entire trip, it only rained for a short period of time on the first day I arrived which was early hours of the morning.
Salou is most definitely a tourist spot for sure, which is probably why I didn't enjoy it as much as I could of, however everyone out there with their families were absolutely loving life and living it to the best they could - the hotel had a kids club to keep the kids busy so the parents could chill which I think they for sure took advantage of haha! Although it's a very touristic spot, I still lived my best life I could there, exploring the local area and walking to find new places as much as I could.
I had a few medical issues whilst I was over there, and after a few hours in hospital to sort them I was back out and at it relaxing by the pool and chilling as much as I could just like the doctor ordered.
I cant really say much about the food in the local area as I went to the same place everyday for lunch, in the evenings I went to a bar called Lunatics which does such good food and drink, it also has an incredible atmosphere which is always a bonus.
Transport wise, I walked everywhere but I know where is a good few buses which run in the area, there is no metro though so sometimes it's easier to just walk it.
Would I go back? No - personally this area wasn't for me, its gorgeous, its a place to tick off my list of places visited however its not really somewhere I see myself coming back too, unless I had children - then may consider it. But for what Spain has to offer I think Salou is very over rated and over priced. Again, this Is just my personal opinion and others will think differently.
